Collection Description
This pamphlet, issued by the Eleventh Ward Prohibition Club, Newark, is entitled, "Preamble and constitution ..." (Newark: undated). The Club was apparently affiliated with the Prohibition Party. The Party was known for its historic opposition to the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages and was an integral part of the temperance movement. Founded in 1869 in Chicago, it is the oldest existing third party in the United States and the third longest active party. Its membership peaked in the late nineteenth century and declined after the adoption of the 18th (Prohibition) Amendment in 1920.
